An American workwear company founded in 1889 in Dearborn, Michigan by Hamilton Carhartt, who started with two sewing machines and about five employees after a conversation with a railroad engineer convinced him there was real demand for tougher work clothing. The first product was a heavy-duty bib overall for railroad workers, made from duck and denim, built around the company's original slogan, "honest value for an honest dollar." Within 20 years it had expanded into eight more cities, including plants in the UK and Canada.
