A Portuguese shoemaker with roots to 1942, when Carlos Santos, trained by his own shoemaker father, opened his workshop in São João da Madeira, a town at the center of Portugal's shoemaking industry. Starting in the shoe trade at 14, Santos spent decades traveling to study manufacturing abroad, at points buying and dismantling other makers' shoes to understand their construction firsthand. The company remains one of the few Portuguese shoemakers to build shoes on the Goodyear welt system by largely manual technique, and is now run by his children, Armando and Ana Santos.
