Gieves & Hawkes formed in 1974, when Gieves Ltd, a naval outfitter dating to 1785, acquired Hawkes & Co., an army tailor founded in 1771 that had owned No. 1 Savile Row since 1912. Between them the two houses had been holding Royal Warrants since the turn of the 19th century (Gieves for the Royal Navy, Hawkes for the British Army), warrants the merged company still carries. It remains headquartered at that same Savile Row address today.
