Daniel J. Wellehan Sr., William Beaudoin and Joseph Cordeau founded Sebago in Maine in 1946. The brand's Docksiders became a staple on American university and prep school campuses through the 1980s, earning a mention in The Official Preppy Handbook, and the Campsides blucher moccasin followed in 1981. Sebago sponsored major sailing events including the Single-Handed Trans-Atlantic Race in 1984 and the America's Cup in 1992, and Italian company BasicNet acquired the brand from Wolverine World Wide in 2017.
